In the 1970s, the F-4EJ Phantom II, an adaptation of the U.S. Air Force's F-4E, became integral to all six squadrons of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). With 140 units manufactured exclusively for the JASDF, the F-4EJ boasted offensive armaments including a 20mm Vulcan cannon mounted under the nose, along with the capability to deploy AIM-7E Sparrow and AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles.
