The F-2, a versatile multirole fighter, emerged from the lineage of the USAF's F-16 but was a collaborative endeavor between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin, serving the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Commencing production in 1996, the manufacturing split stood at 60/40 between Japan and the United States. Its defining feature, larger wings, posed a design challenge; while they enhance payload and maneuverability, they typically burden the aircraft with additional weight, affecting acceleration, climbing, and range. To counter this, the F-2 employed graphite-epoxy composite materials for the wing's skin, spars, ribs, and cap, ensuring structural integrity without excessive weight. Moreover, Japan took charge of developing and integrating the flight control systems, alongside final assembly conducted by MHI. This unique collaboration earned the F-2 the nickname "Viper Zero," a tribute to the F-16's "Viper" moniker and a nod to Japan's aviation heritage embodied by the Mitsubishi A6M Zero.
